New Zealand High Commission Canberra, Australia
The building
The Chancery building was designed for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Ministry of Works. The exterior of the Chancery has a uniform shading provided by the dark bronze green finish from the infill panels and bronze window frames. Contrast is given by the vertical copper finished columns.
Appropriately for New Zealand’s main Government building in Australia, care has been taken in fitting out the building to establish a specifically New Zealand identity and also show the high quality of New Zealand material and products. Wool carpet from New Zealand has been used throughout. The wood panelling, which is used extensively in the public areas, is rimu, a high quality New Zealand native wood. The same wood has been used for the furniture in the public area. The marble used on the feature wall in the foyer and as the base of the flagpole, was imported from New Zealand.
