Australia: NSW Bush Fires

A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales (NSW) as several bush fires burn. The Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, has been the worst-hit region.

For the latest information on the bush fires, including advice on what to do and where the bush fires are located, please see the NSW Rural Fire Service’s website. New Zealanders in NSW are advised to follow any instructions issued by the NSW Rural Fire Service and other local authorities. In addition, you should keep your family in New Zealand informed of your well-being.

The NSW Rural Fire Service’s Bush Fire Survival Plan provides valuable information on protecting your home and yourself in the event a bush fire occurs in your vicinity.

New Zealanders in Australia, who have been significantly affected by the bush fires and meet certain eligibility criteria, can apply to receive emergency relief payments from the Australian Government. For information on these payments and eligibility criteria please see the Australian Department of Human Services website.

New Zealanders affected by the bush fires and requiring consular assistance should contact the New Zealand Consulate-General in Sydney on +61 2 8256 2000 or after hours +61 2 9225 2300.
