Commonwealth assistance for WA bushfires

Commonwealth assistance for WA bushfires

13 January 2014

The Attorney-General, the Hon George Brandis QC, today announced that the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment will be provided to eligible residents affected by bushfires in the Local Government Area of Mundaring in Western Australia.

Eligible people can claim a payment of $1,000 per adult and $400 for each child.

“The Disaster Recovery Payment provides much-needed assistance to those most affected by this disaster,” Senator Brandis said.

“The Federal Government recognises that this is a difficult time for those affected by these bushfires, which have had a devastating impact on local communities.”

A person is eligible for the Disaster Recovery Payment if, as a direct result of the disaster:

  • the person is seriously injured
  • the person is an immediate family member of an Australian who is killed
  • the person’s principal place of residence has been destroyed or has sustained major damage, or
  • the person is the principal carer of a child to whom the above criteria applies.

Financial assistance of $1,000 per adult and $400 per child will also be available to eligible New Zealand citizens (‘non-protected’ Special Category Visa, subclass 444 holders) affected by the bushfires. The Australian Government is working closely with the Western Australian Government to identify further recovery assistance requirements for people affected by this disaster.

Claims can be made online at www.humanservices.gov.au or by calling the Australian Government Information Hotline on 180 22 66 from 8am to 5pm local time, Monday to Friday (open until 8pm local time tonight, 13 January).

Completed claim forms can also be lodged in person at a Commonwealth Department of Human Services service centre. Further information on Australian Government assistance is available online at www.disasterassist.gov.au.
