Prime Minister, Minister for Emergency Management

The Australian Government today activated direct payments of additional disaster assistance for communities in Queensland and Northern NSW hit by flooding as a result of recent heavy rainfall.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) of $1000 per adult and $400 per child will be made available through Centrelink to people who have been impacted by flooding in disaster declared areas.

New Zealand Minister for Customs Maurice Williamson and Australian Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor today welcomed the launch of the SmartGate trans-Tasman trial.

The trial will involve the integration of New Zealand’s and Australia’s SmartGate systems and will give some travellers the opportunity to complete part of the Australian arrivals process in New Zealand.

On August 4th Hon Simon Power, Minister of Commerce, spoke to the Trans Tasman Business Circle about progress being undertaken through the Single Economic Market (SEM).

Because of the depth of ties between the two countries, Minister Power highlighted that the SEM continues to strengthen the regulatory environment to enable better trans Tasman business.

He comments that New Zealand Inc can further assist this through increased co-ordination. Minister Power invited discussion on opportunities and challenges.

New Zealand Climate Change Ministers Nick Smith and Tim Groser and Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Mark Dreyfus met in Wellington reaffirming the commitment of both countries to work closely together on climate change.

“Both our countries are determined to do their fair share on combating climate change and making progress on an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” the Ministers and Parliamentary Secretary said.

New Zealand Attorney General Chris Finlayson attended the third ‘Quintet’ meeting of Attorneys-General.

The meeting was hosted by Australian Attorney General Robert McClelland in Sydney and attended by representatives from New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. 

The group meets annually to share ideas and deal with issues of mutual concern such as counter-terrorism, national security, countering extremism, organised crime and legal cooperation.

Justice Minister Simon Power travelled to Australia to attend the final meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) in Adelaide.

SCAG is comprised of the Attorneys-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, its states and territories, and New Zealand's Minister of Justice. Norfolk Island has observer status.

“The final meeting addressed "a number of challenging contemporary justice issues, including cyber crime, social media and privacy, and match-fixing in sport,” Mr Power said.

Ministers English and Swan progress trans-Tasman relationship
Considerable progress has been made in further strengthening trans-Tasman ties, New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bill English and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan said.

After talks in Wellington, the ministers released a stock take showing the steps taken towards the creation of a Single Economic Market between the two countries since an outcome framework was announced in August 2009.
