Voting and elections for Australians in New Zealand
New Zealand citizens or permanent residents (including Australians) with one years residency who are 18 years and over are eligible to register on the electoral roll and vote in elections. New Zealand has had a proportional voting system called Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) since 1996.
To stand for Parliament, one must be a New Zealand citizen or have qualified as an elector on 22 August 1975. The candidate must also be eligible to vote. For further information contact:

The Electoral Enrolment Centre also conducts the Maori option. Every 5 years Maori voters can choose whether to be enrolled on the Maori electoral roll or on the General electoral roll when voting at an election. This choice is made during the Maori Electoral option.
