Citizenship by Grant

A minimum of five years residence in New Zealand is required and certain criteria must be met, including satisfactory character and language references, to become a New Zealand citizen by grant.

Citizenship by Birth

Generally, all persons born in New Zealand are New Zealand citizens, irrespective of the status of their parents. There are a few limited exceptions such as children of people with diplomatic status.
