New Zealand and the European Union
New Zealand's relationship with the European Union is one of the most important, diverse and cooperative that New Zealand maintains. Shared values underpin close governmental and private sector contacts across a broad range of bilateral, regional and multilateral activities.
The European Union is one of New Zealand's most important export markets and a major source of New Zealand imports and investment. New Zealand is also a popular tourist destination for many Europeans. In the multilateral trade field, New Zealand and the European Union espouse increasingly similar open market philosophies. New Zealand and the European Union cooperate closely on a range of development, political and security issues.
Cooperation is also close on international environmental and climate change matters, educational linkages and scientific and technological research. Programmes for scientific and educational exchange maintain an awareness of New Zealand in the European Union and promote the interchange of ideas and experience.
