Work visas
To obtain a work visa you must have a written offer of employment for which you are qualified, and a letter of approval in principle* issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS), or come under the categories of work visas that do not require a letter of approval in principle.
You will also need a work visa for practical experience as an overseas student, professional sportsperson or other specific categories (although no approval in principle is required for these) and for an Internship for voluntary Work, or if you are to receive free board in exchange for services rendered, eg for work on a farm.
*"Approval in Principle"
Employers in New Zealand are required to fill job vacancies with people from the local employment market. However, if this is not possible, they can apply to the New Zealand Immigration Service in New Zealand for permission to employ people from overseas. If permission is granted they are issued with an "Approval in Principle". You must submit this "Approval in Principle" with your work visa application.
