Budding Brazilian All Blacks in Sao Paulo - Consulate General sponsors children’s mini Rugby World Cup tournament in Sao Paulo on 15 October 2011
The Consulate General co-sponsored a mini-Rugby World Cup tournament for kids in Sao Paulo on 15 October. The tournament was organised by one of the city's main rugby clubs and co-sponsored by a number of major Brazilian and foreign companies.
Around 200 kids had a great day playing rugby in foreign national teams in the first of the summer rains while their parents watched from the shelter of the Consulate General stand. There we had on offer New Zealand wine and an array of New Zealand Inc promotional materials. The event was covered by local media.
Rugby remains a niche sport in Brazil. Its popularity is growing though now that it is an official Olympic sport and Brazil plans to compete in all sports when it hosts the Olympics in 2016. Players and supporters here come from a range of backgrounds, from elite universities to slums, but the major clubs attract businesspeople and have major corporations as their sponsors.
The Consulate General has also partnered with ESPN and a New Zealand owned bar in Sao Paulo called All Black to promote the Rugby World Cup here. ESPN is screening footage of the Consul General talking about the New Zealand host cities before its screening of the games. The All Black bar will be the venue for Consulate General's New Zealand breakfast event for this weekend's final Cup game.
