Joint Declaration

On the occasion of the MERCOSUR Summit in Foz do Iguaçu, the Foreign Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, and the Ambassador of New Zealand to Brazil, participated as Special Guests in the XL Meeting of MERCOSUR's Common Market Council (CMC), on 16 December, 2010. The Foreign Ministers of MERCOSUR expressed their deep satisfaction at the presence of Minister Rudd and the representative from New Zealand.
 
The Ministers of MERCOSUR and Australia and New Zealand’s representative reaffirmed their commitment to enhance the long-standing cooperation between their countries. In particular, they considered the importance of strengthening economic and trade relations between their countries. They recognized the importance of trade and investment flows.
 
MERCOSUR, Australia and New Zealand will endeavor to take appropriate measures to facilitate and strengthen trade and investment between them. In this context, the Ministers reaffirmed the importance of reactivating the MERCOSUR-CER Dialogue launched in 1994, and highlighted the meeting held in Punta del Este, on 19 April, 2010, between representatives of MERCOSUR, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the possibility of negotiating an arrangement strengthening relations between MERCOSUR and Australia and New Zealand.
 
In order to strengthen trade and economic relations, the Ministers of MERCOSUR and Australia and New Zealand will encourage a regular dialogue at Ministerial and/or senior officials' level to address topics of common interest. The Dialogue will be convened annually, or at a mutually determined interval, and will consider, among others, the following topics:
 
(a) identification of appropriate actions to promote market access for goods and services;
(b) monitoring the development of MERCOSUR-Australia-New Zealand trade and investment relations in order to identify and promote opportunities for expanding such relations;
(c) analysis of factors and measures, including those of third countries, influencing MERCOSUR-Australia-New Zealand trade and investment relations;
(d) facilitating and encouraging increased involvement of private sectors, through promoting business missions, trade fairs and other initiatives; and
(e) cooperation and consultations in the WTO and in the Cairns Group and other relevant international forums on multilateral trade and economic issues.
