Hurricane Maria

The Canadian Hurricane Centre (www.ec.gc.ca/ouragans-hurricanes/) has issued a warning that Hurricane Maria is expected to make landfall in south-eastern Newfoundland, primarily along the Avalon Peninsula, Friday afternoon (16 September 2011).

People should follow the advice of local authorities at all times and can follow developments through the CBC (www.cbc.ca/news), CTV (www.ctvnews.ca) and Weather Network (www.theweathernetwork.com) websites. The Canadian Hurricane Centre also advises how to prepare for a hurricane at its website (listed above).

New Zealanders requiring urgent consular assistance should contact the New Zealand High Commission at (613) 238-5991.

The High Commission reminds New Zealanders in Canada to update their information on our Safetravel website, www.safetravel.govt.nz, or take this opportunity to register. It is also important to keep friends and family in New Zealand updated on your welfare.
