Hurricane Irene

New Zealanders in Canada may be aware that the U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has issued an alert for a tropical storm/hurricane that is currently located off the coast of Florida. A hurricane warning is in effect for Eastern Coastal States from Florida to Massachusetts.

During a hurricane warning, visitors and tourists staying in travel accommodation should follow the guidance of the accommodation management and/or tour operators. It is generally considered sensible practice not to venture outdoors and remain well away from the sea/ocean. You should follow the advice of the local authorities at all times and seek suitable shelter. People should also monitor the media through CBC or CTV.

For further information on Hurricane Irene visit the Environment Canada website or the U.S. NHC website

New Zealanders in Canada requiring urgent consular assistance should contact the New Zealand High Commission on (613) 238-5991.

The Embassy reminds New Zealanders in the affected states to update their information on our Safetravel website, www.safetravel.govt.nz or take this opportunity to register. It is also important to keep friends and family in New Zealand updated on your welfare.
