New Zealand appoints Honorary Consul in Calgary, Alberta

OTTAWA, April 17, 2014

The New Zealand High Commissioner in Ottawa, His Excellency Simon Tucker, today announced the appointment of Stephen Snyder as the New Zealand Honorary Consul in Calgary, Alberta.

"New Zealand is delighted to make this appointment”, said Tucker.  “It represents recognition by New Zealand of the importance of Alberta and the opportunities that exist to grow the economic, political and cultural ties between New Zealand and the Province.”

As former CEO of TransAlta Corporation, Mr Snyder significantly increased its generation capacity and built a highly successful energy trading business, with 70 power plants, generating nearly $3 billion in annual revenue and with $9 billion in assets. During this time, Mr Snyder was responsible for significant investment into the New Zealand electricity market in the 1990s.  He has impeccable business credentials and was named Canadian Energy Person of the Year in 2010 by the Energy Council of Canada.

New Zealand’s main exports to Alberta are currently wine, beverages and specialised equipment.  New Zealand companies are well positioned to work with Alberta’s business and energy sectors, with technology and support solutions across infrastructure development, transportation, construction and manufacturing.  Alberta based companies are a significant investor into the mineral and energy sectors in New Zealand.

"My Snyder’s knowledge in the business community will be instrumental in advancing New Zealand’s’ interests in Calgary by continuing to facilitate contacts with business and political leaders, especially in the energy and mineral sectors of Alberta," said Tucker.   "My team in Ottawa is looking forward to working with him.”

Mr Snyder will also support the High Commission on consular matters in Calgary for New Zealanders travelling and living in Alberta.
