After visiting Mexico and Colombia, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt Hon John Key, arrived along with the delegation in Santiago on 7 March. The Royal New Zealand Air Force plane landed with a beautiful orange sky as backdrop and was received by a Chilean guard with a formal welcome.

On March 6, Rt Hon John Key and delegation arrived in Bogota for the first visit of a New Zealand Prime Minister to Colombia. The day started with the First Colombia – New Zealand Business Seminar at Club El Nogal, which was organised by the Embassy and NZTE with the support of ProExport and ANDI from Colombia.

On 27 November, the President of Chile, Sebastian Piñera, along with the Minister of Economy, Pablo Longueira, the Minister of Education, Harald Beyer, and the New Zealand Ambassador, John Capper, along with other Government officials launched the “Penguins without Borders” education scheme in Santiago.

The receiving office for New Zealand visa applications is about to change. From 27 November 2012, applications can no longer be lodged with the New Zealand Embassy in Santiago, and instead need to be sent to the New Zealand Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Washington D.C.

Immigration New Zealand is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for its customers and is working closely with the New Zealand Embassy in implementing this change.

There is a $USD37.00 handling fee per application, in addition to the relevant visa fee.

During late October two renowned Maori leaders visited Peru and Chile where they met with a diverse array of political and social actors. During their visit Traci Houpapa – Chairwoman of the Federation of Maori Authorities – and Manuka Henare – Dean of Maori and Pacific Development at the University of Auckland – had the opportunity to meet with government officials from different Ministries and a vast array of representatives of diverse indigenous peoples from Peru. The three day programme was centred on sharing experiences on economic and business initiatives managed by local communities and the implementation of the Peruvian Consultation Law.
