New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon Murray McCully visited Chile 10 – 11 August.

During his meeting with Chilean Foreign Minister Alfredo Moredo, Minister McCully announced an additional NZ$1 million contribution to the earthquake reconstruction effort, dedicated to rebuilding schools damaged by the earthquake of 27 February.
 

The Ministers also signed an arrangement to enhance the operation of the existing Working Holiday Scheme between Chile and New Zealand,:

The New Zealand Embassy has carried out a series of reconstruction projects, in addition to the New Zealand Government’s immediate contribution of NZ$500,000, following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck southern and central Chile on 27 February.

To ensure scientific research can continue following the devastating earthquake in Chile, Victoria University is offering six four-month fellowships to Chilean scientists.

 

"Scientists have lost samples they had been collecting for many years, and we understand that in some cases whole collections that are important to the ecosystem in Chile have been lost," says Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Neil Quigley.

To contribute to the recovery effort of the area devastated by the recent flooding in the area of Machu Picchu, the New Zealand Government has made a cash donation of US$100,000 to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support the Peruvian Government in the provision of essential non-food items to flood victims.

The flooding affected a large number of inhabitants, in many cases causing the loss of homes and possessions as well as destroying the crops which provided the main source of income for the local population.

Following a review of existing processes and criteria it has been decided that from 1 March 2010, and until further notice, the Embassy will no longer receive unsolicited applications for grants from the Santiago Head of Mission Fund.

Applications received before that date will be considered and applicants will be advised of the results in the usual manner. Applications received after that date will be acknowledged and referred to this notice.

The Embassy will continue to work with partners to identify appropriate development projects.
