New Zealand contributes to the restoration of Aguas Calientes in Peru

To contribute to the recovery effort of the area devastated by the recent flooding in the area of Machu Picchu, the New Zealand Government has made a cash donation of US$100,000 to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support the Peruvian Government in the provision of essential non-food items to flood victims.

The flooding affected a large number of inhabitants, in many cases causing the loss of homes and possessions as well as destroying the crops which provided the main source of income for the local population.

The New Zealand Government provides official development assistance to Peru through the Latin American Development Programme (LADP) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Several of the projects funded by the LADP have activities in the flood affected areas.

This collaboration is also an expression of New Zealand’s appreciation to the Government of Peru for all the assistance provided to the twenty-nine New Zealand citizens who had to be rescued from Aguas Calientes following the flooding. It is hoped that this support will further strengthen relations between New Zealand and Peru, and with the communities involved.
