Safe Travel - Landslides and flooding in Peru and Bolivia

In late January 2010 over 3000 tourists, including 21 New Zealanders were evacuated from the village of Aguas Calientes, Peru following landslides and flooding in the tourist areas around Machu Picchu. Heavy rains, landslides and flooding in Bolivia have now caused a state of emergency to be declared in a number of areas including La Paz, the Bellavista district to the south of La Paz, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca and Beni. New Zealanders who intend to travel between Peru and Bolivia overland, should be aware that landslides have blocked routes in and out of Cusco, Peru.

We urge all New Zealanders travelling or resident in the flood affected areas in Peru or Bolivia to monitor media reports for updates, follow instructions from local authorities and keep in regular contact with friends and family in New Zealand to inform them of your wellbeing.

New Zealanders travelling or residing in Peru or Bolivia are encouraged to Register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
