New Zealand is the world’s most peaceful nation

New Zealand has retained its place at the top of the Institute for Economics and Peace’s Global Peace Index for 2010.
The index, drawing from 23 indicators such as relations with neighbouring countries, respect for human rights and level of military expenditure, is an attempt to measure how peaceful each of the 149 included countries is.
New Zealand was also rated as the most peaceful country for 2009, and has been in the top four since the index was launched in 2007.
The index also provides an insight into global peace. The 2010 index shows that the world has become less peaceful in the past four years, with 62% of countries recording decreases in their peace index over that period.
Iceland, Japan, Austria and Norway were the other countries in the top five for 2010.
More information on the index can be found here.
