Eric Rush in Fiji for Rugby Centenary Conference

Eric Rush addressing the cocktail reception

Former All Black and 7s captain Eric Rush visited Fiji as a keynote speaker for the “Fiji Rugby Centenary Conference: Reflections on the Past, Present and Future” organised by the University of the South Pacific (USP) on 1-2 July.

This was the first academic conference on rugby held in the Pacific Islands.

The New Zealand High Commission organised Eric’s participation in the conference with funding from the New Zealand Public Diplomacy Fund.

Several speakers from New Zealand universities and other overseas institutions participated in the conference.

The conference provided the opportunity to consider the many facets of rugby in Fiji and the wider Pacific.

The New Zealand High Commission also organised a cocktail reception in the honour of the great 7s player and a wide range of Fijian community got a chance to meet him and share his experience of 7s rugby.

He acknowledged the importance of rugby in Fiji and highlighted “Fiji as the home of 7s rugby” adding that “Fijians are the friendliest people in the world until the whistle blows.”
