The Secondary Schools Essay Competition has become a popular and well established event in Fiji’s education calendar, allowing senior students to illustrate their writing skills.

For the past three consecutive years, students from schools all over Fiji have entered the competition and produced many impressive and well researched essays.

Given the success of this competition, the New Zealand High Commission and the Fiji Association in Auckland (Inc) are once again pleased to announce the 2012 National Essay Competition.

With the beginning of the new school term, three schools on the outskirts of Savusavu, Nausori and Suva have benefited from the New Zealand High Commission’s (NZHC) small grants scheme.

Under the Head of Mission Fund, FJ$7000 worth of library books was donated to the schools.

In order to improve literacy, encourage students to read and research, especially students in disadvantaged areas, NZHC was pleased to provide educational support in the form of library books.

Australia and New Zealand will together provide up to F$1 million to assist the people of Fiji respond to the effects of the flooding that has caused extensive damage in recent days.

Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office reports indicate that more than 1,500 people have been evacuated because of the floods which now affect most parts of the country but, more particularly, the Western Division.

A school in the remote district of Ba is in high spirits after the New Zealand High Commission (NZHC) stepped in to help upgrade the school’s furniture.

The school, with a roll of 47 students, received a delivery of 42 single desks and chairs recently.

The Head teacher of Qerelevu Hindu School, Navinesh Kumar, expressed his sincere thanks for the funding assistance of $2730 under the Head of Mission Fund (HOMF) scheme.

The New Zealand High Commission (NZHC) for a third consecutive year hosted the prize giving ceremony for the winners of the Secondary Schools Essay Competition at the New Zealand Official Residence on Saturday 6 August.

This competition is organised jointly by the Fiji Association of Auckland (Inc) and the High Commission.

New Zealand High Commission (NZHC) in partnership with Walk On Walk Strong (WOWS) organised a lunch for the Laughing Samoans at the Official Residence on Friday 12 August.

This was to celebrate the work of WOWS as well as acknowledge the contribution of the Laughing Samoans.

The Laughing Samoans had done three live shows in Fiji to support the WOWS Fiji event.

New Zealand Aid Programme Regional Development Manager, Emma Dunlop-Bennett said it was a very kind gesture of the Laughing Samoans to support the WOWS programme.

Public diplomacy and reinforcing the strong people-to-people linkages between New Zealand and Fiji is an important focus for the New Zealand High Commission.

We were delighted, along with other institutions, to provide funding for the production “Ta’aroa - Pacific Ballet of Creation.” Produced by the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies at the University of the South Pacific, the production presented creation mythologies from Tahiti, Samoa and Aoteara New Zealand as exciting theatre.
