2010 LOCAL COUNCIL AND DISTRICT HEALTH BOARD ELECTIONS
Voting in the local elections is by postal vote. All voters who are enrolled will receive over the next few weeks an enrolment update pack to check that their details are correct.
Enrolment update packs will be sent to voters’ postal addresses therefore New Zealand voters overseas who provided an overseas postal address will receive their pack at their overseas postal address, and voters with a NZ postal address but who are travelling overseas will receive their pack at their NZ address. Any voters who have not received an update pack, but expected to, should visit the elections website www.elections.org.nz to check their eligibility, to update their details, or to enrol online.
In September 2010 voting papers will be sent to those who are enrolled. Voting papers must be received by the Electoral Officer by midday on Saturday 9 October 2010.
Key Dates
Early July 2010: Enrolment drive commences - update packs posted to enrolled voters
17-22 September 2010: Voting papers delivered to those enrolled
9 October 2010: Voting closes at midday on Saturday 9 October
Who is eligible to enrol
New Zealand citizens or permanent residents are eligible to enrol if:
- they are 18 years or older; and
- have lived in New Zealand for more than one year continuously at some time in their life, and in addition if:
- they are a NZ citizen they need to have been in NZ within the last 3 years; or
- they are a permanent resident of NZ they need to have been in NZ in the last 12 months.
How to enrol
To obtain an enrolment form or to update their details, voters may either:
- visit the elections website www.elections.org.nz to enrol or to update their details online; or
- complete an enrolment form at a New Zealand Post overseas.
Voting in October 2010
Voting in the local elections is by postal vote. Voters who have provided an overseas postal address will receive their voting papers at this overseas address. Voters who have enrolled and provided a postal address in New Zealand, but are overseas at the time of voting, will need to arrange for their voting papers to be forwarded to them.
Voting papers must be posted, and must be received by the Electoral Officer by midday on Saturday 9 October 2010. Voting papers cannot be emailed or faxed.
