Passport validity
If you are coming to New Zealand temporarily, your passport must be valid either:

For at least three months beyond the date on which you intend to depart New Zealand, or
- For one month beyond the date on which you intend to depart New Zealand, if the issuing government has consular representation in New Zealand that is able to issue and renew travel documents (you should check with your issuing authority before travelling).

A Personalausweis is NOT a Reisepass
Would-be visitors to New Zealand should note that a Federal Republic of Germany passport (Reisepass) is required in order to travel or apply for a visa. A German identity card (Personalausweis) is only valid for travel within the Schengen area. If applying for a New Zealand visa, please make sure you provide your Reisepass, not Ausweis, number.
