On Friday 14 November 2014, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was welcomed in Auckland by New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.  The visit reaffirmed the close and long-standing relations between Germany and New Zealand, building on the 60 years of diplomatic relations which were celebrated in 2013.

Gottfried Lindauer (1839 -1926) born in Pilsen (today in the Czech Republic). Having trained at the Vienna Academy of Art, Lindauer emigrated to New Zealand in 1873, arriving in Wellington in 1874. Until his death in 1926, Lindauer devoted his professional life almost exclusively to depicting the Māori of New Zealand.
