Christchurch to host 2011 Wine & Food festival - German wine makers donate their products

The 2011 Wine & Food festival is to take place at Hyde Park in Christchurch on December 3rd, 2011 .

As the Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung reports, the German federal state capital city of Mainz and Great Wine Capitals are exclusive partners of the wine festival in Christchurch.

They have collected more than 300 bottles from a dozen wine makers from Mainz and five wine makers from Rheinhessen to donate to the festival: "After the heavy earthquake in February this year we would like to make New Zealand regain some joie de vivre" - this is the aim of the charity initiative.

The revenues generated by selling the wine will be given to charitable projects in New Zealand. Some 50 leading wineries from Christchurch and the South Island will present themselves, plus there will be events such as wine seminars, cooking shows and live music. The selection of wines from Mainz and Rheinhessen will enrich the Christchurch festival. Great Wine Capitals manager Elke Höllein hopes the initiative will lead to a sustainable exchange of wines between Germany and New Zealand.
