Sir Henry van der Heyden, Chairman of Fonterra Cooperative Group, visited Berlin on 5-6 July for talks with senior officials and business representatives. Fonterra is New Zealand's biggest company and the world's leading dairy exporter.

While in Berlin, Sir Henry met with Parliamentary State Secretary Dr Gerd Müller of the Federal Agriculture Ministry, to follow up on Dr Müller's visit to New Zealand last year. In addition, Ambassador Peter Rider hosted a lunch with senior representatives from the Federal  Economics Ministry, the Federal Foreign Office, and the leading Germany dairy organisations, including the German Farmers' Union (DBV), the Raiffeisen Association (DRV) and the Association of the German Dairy Industry (MIV).

A main topic of discussion was recent trends in world dairy trade, including the growth of markets in Asia. While retaining its base in New Zealand, Fonterra operates on an increasingly global basis, with significant product volumes sourced from outside New Zealand.
