Honorary Queen’s Service Medal awarded to Hans-Heinrich Meyer

Hans-Heinrich Meyer, a German from Lower Saxony who has for many years looked after the graves of New Zealand servicemen in Germany and established contact to their families in New Zealand, has been awarded an Honorary Queen’s Service Medal (QSM).

Ambassador Peter Rider was among the first to congratulate Hans-Heinrich Meyer: “This honour appropriately acknowledges the extremely valuable work Hans-Heinrich Meyer is doing with the families of New Zealand servicemen laid to rest in Becklingen. I know how important this work is to those families. The energy and commitment  he has invested in this project is admirable.” Every year, on ANZAC Day, Meyer and a group of other German reservists organise a ceremony at the war cemetery in Becklingen, to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives in past wars.

The QSM is awarded to persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the well-being of New Zealand or for the understanding among nations. Ambassador Peter Rider, in his letter of congratulations, wrote “I am delighted that your valuable work has been given this significant public recognition”.
