New Zealand Embassy participates in life flag

The New Zealand Embassy is one of 70 Berlin embassies participating in life flag, an art project by Bootschaft, run as part of Berlin´s Year of Science and the Year of the Convergence of Cultures, 2010. (“Bootschaft” is a play on the German words for “boat” (Boot) and “message” or “embassy” (Botschaft).)

From now until 14 October a special flag, designed by the Berlin‐based artist Sabine Kacunko, will be on display outside the Embassy. The flag displays bio‐molecular coloured micro‐organisms. Their uniform colour and pattern is based on the markings of ribosomes (rRNA), which occur in bacteria, plants and animals including humans. The hanging of the flag is intended to spread a global message of multilateral sensitivity to environmental and cultural concerns on planet Earth, our common home.

Related events include the exhibition life flag, opening at the Robert Koch Institute of Microbiology and Hygiene on 8 October 2010, and a live media performance to take place from 7 to 10 October 2010, at Schlossplatz in Berlin-Mitte.
