New Zealand Film "There Once was an Island" wins at the 2010 Leipzig DOK festival

"There Once was an Island", by New Zealand director Briar March, has won the Peaceful Revolution Foundation award at the 2010 Leipzig DOK festival. "There Once was an Island" also won the Stiftung Friedliche Revolution award, the Leipziger Ring trophy and 5000 Euros.

Living away from home, the thought of not being able ever to return there, because home no longer exists, is chilling and incomprehensible. Perhaps even worse, though, is watching your home, your entire world, disappear before your eyes, while not fully understanding why and feeling powerless to stop the course of destruction.

This is the heart-wrenching situation facing the 400 residents of the tiny Pacific atoll of Nukutoa. Briar March’s film brings this reality to life and takes us all with her. Her film follows Satty and Telo, two fishermen, their families and community, as they contemplate the future amongst the pleasures of daily life on the island, like a baby being lulled to sleep on the lap of his mouth-organ-playing grandfather...
