Tonight the 30,000th Last Post ceremony will take place at the Menin Gate in Belgium. The ceremony has come to symbolise not only a remembrance of those who died in the Great War, but also the ongoing connection between Belgium and the former Allied nations.
Later this year and early next year, New Zealanders enrolled to vote will be asked to participate in two postal referenda to consider the future of the New Zealand flag:
1. to rank the shortlist of four flag alternatives
2. to keep the current flag or adopt the preferred alternative design.
At the invitation of the President of the German Bundestag, Prof Dr Norbert Lammert, Rt Hon David Carter, Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, led a parliamentary delegation to Berlin and Munich, Germany from 19-24 April.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully has announced that New Zealand will make an initial contribution of $1 million to assist Nepal following Saturday's devastating earthquake. “New Zealand’s contribution will be provided to agencies that are active on the ground and have the capability to provide immediate assistance,” Mr McCully says.
