New Zealand Embassy Berlin, Germany


New Zealand Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Hon Christopher Finlayson and Austrian Foreign Minister Dr Michael Spindelegger met on Friday 5 November in Vienna.

High on the agenda was the announcement of the reopening of a New Zealand Embassy in Vienna in January 2011. The new Embassy will be co-located with the existing Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and will take over the accreditation to Austria currently held by the New Zealand Embassy in Berlin.


"There Once was an Island", by New Zealand director Briar March, has won the Peaceful Revolution Foundation award at the 2010 Leipzig DOK festival. "There Once was an Island" also won the Stiftung Friedliche Revolution award, the Leipziger Ring trophy and 5000 Euros.


Last Friday, 1 October, was a night of celebrations in Leipzig. As part of the city’s Interkulturelle Wochen festival, the English-language magazine Leipzig Zeitgeist marked its second birthday with a New Zealand evening at the Club International.

The New Zealand Embassy is one of 70 Berlin embassies participating in life flag, an art project by Bootschaft, run as part of Berlin´s Year of Science and the Year of the Convergence of Cultures, 2010. (“Bootschaft” is a play on the German words for “boat” (Boot) and “message” or “embassy” (Botschaft).)


New Zealand baritone Jonathan Lemalu will perform at the Philharmonie in Berlin on Monday 11 October 2010, at 8 pm in the Kammermusiksaal.

Together with pianist Malcolm Martineau, Lemalu will present famous works by Robert Schumann und Johannes Brahms, in addition to lesser known works by Modest Mussorgsky, Gabriel Fauré and Richard Rodney Bennett.


On the occasion of the second birthday of Leipzig Zeitgeist, and as part of Leipzig's "Interkulturelle Wochen", Leipzig Zeitgeist and Club International are delighted to present a "New Zealand Evening".


On 4 September 2010 a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Christchurch and the wider South Island. The quake was centred 40 km west of Christchurch and 10 km underground, and struck at 4.35 am New Zealand time. Aftershocks are continuing.

On 31 July the German daily newspaper Die Welt published a feature article about the Matamata farm used as the set for Hobbiton in the film trilogy The Lord of the Rings. The farm, with its picturesque rolling hills and concrete hobbit holes, has become a leading tourist attraction and is now set to appear in the film version of The Hobbit.
