On the 3rd of April Kiwi chick Manu saw the light of day at Frankfurt Zoo. Now, a few weeks later, the lively brown bird is exploring its enclosure in the breeding house. Manu is a North Island Brown Kiwi, an endangered species listed on the IUCN Red List.

When presenting the new chick, Professor Manfred Niekisch, Director of Frankfurt Zoo, commented that they are particularly proud of the fact that with the hatch of the 31st Frankfurt-born Kiwi they have again contributed to the preservation of this extraordinary species.

Captain Wilhelm Geresbeck is on a three-year pilot exchange with the Royal New Zealand Air Force in Ohakea, New Zealand. In March this year, Sylvia Jaeck of the weekly newspaper “Bundeswehr aktuell” interviewed Captain Geresbeck about his adventures and challenges in Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud.

The Kiwi team consists of Germany- and Netherlands-based players who have Super 14, international and/or NPC-Air NZ Cup experience.

Scientist Professor Peter Schwerdtfeger, whose research has helped explain the physics and chemistry behind the colour of gold, has been awarded a prestigious Humboldt Research Award.

The award, also known as the Humboldt Prize, is given by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, in Bonn, Germany, to academics whose new theories, discoveries or insights have had a significant impact on their discipline and who expect to continue producing cutting-edge research in the future.
