Making tax easier – Government consultation
The Government is consulting on changes to the way you deal with Inland Revenue.
Changes would mean simpler PAYE and tax returns, better online services and reduced business compliance costs. Join the discussion at www.ird.govt.nz/makingtaxeasier.
PAYE deducted each pay-day would be more accurate and, for some people in fulltime work, could be a final tax.
People would manage most of their tax and social policy affairs through their own secure area on Inland Revenue’s website – like internet banking. For business, off-the-shelf business accounting software would take care of routine tax tasks such as PAYE by automatically communicating with Inland Revenue at times that suit business needs.
Proposals to share information with other government departments – with appropriate safeguards - would make it easier for people swapping between jobs or between a benefit and jobs, or going on parental leave.
Videos and stories on the site show differences between dealing with Inland Revenue now and what the future could hold.

Consultation closes on 23 July.
