Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

Thu 02.04.09 Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common childhood illness that circulates through many day cares, kindergartens and schools in various parts of the world each year. It is a viral infection commonly seen in infants and children. It is usually caused by a group of viruses called enteroviruses. Not all HFMD is caused by the specific enterovirus 71 (EV71) that has caused recent deaths in China. The most common causative agent is Coxsackie virus A. EV71 can cause a more severe form of HFMD, especially in children under 5 years old, but the vast majority of EV71 cases are still mild. In many rural areas of China, hygiene is far below acceptable standards and while HFMD is currently in the media spotlight, other diseases cause more deaths and illness.
