Education: pressing ahead to deepen links
From Ambassador David Taylor's blog:
New Zealand Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, and Employment Hon Steven Joyce and Education New Zealand CEO Grant McPherson visited Jakarta in early July at the same time as a group of senior representatives from New Zealand tertiary institutions and education providers. This was a good opportunity to take stock of where we’ve got to in the education relationship and what the next steps might be.
New Zealand is seeking to help Indonesia nurture its next generation of leaders and as such we have lifted our postgraduate scholarship awards to Indonesia from 15 to 50 per year, including a special focus on training in geothermal energy and agriculture. In response, Indonesia has made New Zealand one of only six preferred partner countries for PhD study by university lecturers. We are seeing a good increase in Indonesian PhD candidate numbers as a result.
