New Zealand congratulates our ASEAN friends on the 46th anniversary of ASEAN

A flag raising ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat (Jakarta, 23 August 2013)

The ASEAN Secretariat hosted celebrations to mark the 46th anniversary of ASEAN in Jakarta on Friday 23 August 2013. The commemoration began with a flag raising ceremony to the rousing tune of the ASEAN anthem, skilfully performed by the ASEAN Choir.

Secretary General of ASEAN H.E. Le Luong Minh spoke of the issues currently being addressed by ASEAN: building the economic community, ensuring progress on climate change, energy and food security and integrating ASEAN into the global community of nations.

Indonesian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Wardana delivered remarks on behalf of Foreign Minister H.E. Dr Marty Natalegawa, recognising ASEAN’s growth from a region of conflict to a region of peace and stability, economic growth and social progress with a strong vision for the future.

Brunei Darussalam’s Ambassador to ASEAN, H.E. Emaleen Abd Rahman Teo, representing the ASEAN Chair, spoke of the challenges ASEAN had overcome in the past and Brunei’s commitment to ensure that the people of ASEAN feel not only part of a community, but also well equipped to take an active part in the community’s success.

Speaking on behalf of ASEAN’s  dialogue partners and international friends, New Zealand Ambassador David Taylor commended ASEAN on keeping alive and bringing to reality the dream of its founding fathers in 1976. He welcomed ASEAN’s leadership in the region and praised its achievements, pledging to continue to assist ASEAN deal with challenges and make the most of the opportunities before us.

The administrators of the ASEAN community Facebook page, a group of 40 young people from countries throughout ASEAN, ran a photo competition on the theme of “raising your ASEANality”. Copies of the vibrant photos from ASEAN member countries were displayed in the ASEAN Hall and certificates presented for the winners.

While ASEAN Day traditionally falls on 8 August, out of respect for those celebrating Eid-ul Fitr, this year the celebrations marking ASEAN Day were held on 23 August.
