Taste New Zealand culinary events in Jakarta and Bali
Indonesia’s culinary high flyers were left impressed by New Zealand food and wine following two more successful Taste New Zealand events in Bali and Jakarta last week. Two lucky prize winners were presented with return flights to New Zealand: I Wayan Sukadana of the Four Seasons Jimbaran Hotel in Bali, and Marten Schwass of Jakarta’s Kempinski Hotel.
A Bali beachside celebration featured New Zealand wines, meat, kiwifruit and avocado oil in a unique menu created by Executive Sous Chef Allen Stevano of the Conrad Bali Hotel. Chef Allen cooked in New Zealand hotels for five years, and is passionate about marrying New Zealand ingredients with Indonesian influences. Local hospitality playmakers enjoyed a red wine cocktail invented by Bali-based New Zealand wine expert, Nick Dumergue. Nick provided an array of New Zealand wine pairings for the menu and spoke about the innovation and strength of New Zealand’s wine industry.
In Jakarta, Indonesia’s leading culinary celebrity William Wongso endorsed New Zealand sauvignon blanc as the perfect match for popular Indonesian dishes. Citing the wine’s fresh and fruity flavours, Wongso suggested pairing NZ sauvignon blancs with spicy Indonesian cuisine. Chef Wongso also discussed how New Zealand’s grass-fed beef and lamb cuts can be used in Indonesian cooking to enhance the flavour of traditional dishes. Indonesian celebrity chef Farah Quinn was also in attendance. Guests enjoyed a menu featuring outstanding New Zealand meat, kiwifruit and chocolate paired with a wide variety of award-winning New Zealand wines and liquers.
