Indonesia and New Zealand have agreed to strengthen bilateral links in the geothermal sector. Last week, the President’s Special Delivery Unit on Development Coordination & Oversight (UKP4) held a roundtable discussion on geothermal cooperation between the two countries. At the event, New Zealand presented the findings and recommendations of the Geothermal Scoping Mission that New Zealand commissioned last March to Indonesian government agencies, industries, universities, as well as international organisations.

CEO of Garuda Indonesian Airways Emirsyah Satar and Chair of Indonesia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Suryo Sulisto visited New Zealand recently to explore possible cooperation. In New Zealand, they had the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister John Key and Foreign Minister Murray McCully. Emirsyah Satar and Suryo Sulisto were also invited guests of the New Zealand Prime Minister for the Rugby World Cup.

New Zealand Trade Minister Tim Groser visited Indonesia recently. Minister Groser is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on international trade. He was New Zealand's Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Chair of Agricultural Negotiations for the WTO. The Minister also speaks Bahasa Indonesia, as he once served as the New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia in the 1990s.

Excellence in Indonesian journalism was honoured by the New Zealand Embassy at the 2011 Mochtar Lubis Awards ceremony held in Jakarta on 11 August in the presence of the children of the late Mochtar Lubis.

The Embassy, in partnership with the Institute for Press Studies and Development (LSPP), sponsored one of the award’s five categories – “Best Reporting in the Public Interest.”

Minister of Education Anne Tolley promoted education cooperation and discussed how New Zealand and the Asian region could work together to improve education outcomes at an East Asia Summit (EAS) Education Ministers Meeting in Bali last week.

“This summit provides New Zealand with an opportunity to promote the reputation of our education system as world-leading, innovative and high-quality,’ says Mrs Tolley.

“The new partnership arrangement is an innovative instrument that will enable New Zealand government agencies to increase their cooperation with one of Indonesia’s premier universities,” New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia HE David Taylor said on 15 July in Yogyakarta after signing a partnership arrangement with the Rector of Gadjah Mada University Prof Ir Sudjarwadi, in the presence of New Zealand Minister of Education Hon Anne Tolley.

“Over the next three years the New Zealand Government plans to contribute some NZ$2 million to specific projects. These activities include a project on disaster risk management that will be implemented in collaboration with the New Zealand Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences, a series of training and workshops on community policing, and funding for UGM to manage additional projects.”

On 14 July in Jakarta, New Zealand Minister of Education Hon Anne Tolley signed an Arrangement on Education Cooperation with Indonesia’s Minister of National Education Prof Dr Mohammad Nuh.

“This Arrangement demonstrates the deep commitment of both countries to work together on education projects of mutual interest. Under the Arrangement, officials from both countries will meet regularly to progress specific cooperation projects,” Mrs Tolley said.
