New Zealand development aid is helping improve the lives of thousands of Indonesians living in Aceh at the same time as protecting the ecosystem of one of the largest tropical rainforests left in the world. Known as the Leuser Ecosystem, the rainforest is home to many endangered species including tigers and elephants native to Sumatra.

Award winning New Zealand film maker Gaylene Preston showcased her latest movie, Home by Christmas, at the Balinale Film Festival held in Bali recently.
Home by Christmas is a film memoir based on Gaylene Preston’s interviews with her father about his World War II experiences, and her mother’s life on the home front. It features the film maker's own daughter, actor Chelsie Preston-Crayford, who also attended the festival.

New Zealand is committed to supporting the peace consolidation process in Maluku province through a range of development programmes, said New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, David Taylor at an ASEAN workshop held in Maluku recently.

New Zealand has channelled around NZ$8 million and another NZ$2 million in 2010/11 to various projects in Maluku in the past five years, with the aim of helping these once conflicted-affected communities, he said.

New Zealand will continue to build on its historical cooperation with the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), according to New Zealand Ambassador David Taylor and NTB Governor Muhammad Zainal Majdi, who met recently in Lombok for discussions on how New Zealand can best support the province’s development.

New Zealand held a Commemorative Summit with ASEAN Leaders last week in Ha Noi, celebrating 35 years of partnership.

In the lead up to this historic event, the New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs visited the ASEAN Secretariat and met with both the ASEAN Secretary-General, Mr Surin Pitsuwan, and the ASEAN Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) during a bilateral visit to Indonesia, 19-20 October.

The New Zealand Embassy provided support to the 2010 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival held in Bali recently.
“The Festival attracted wide participation and attention as the premier writers gathering in Indonesia, and perhaps South East Asia,” said New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, David Taylor.

”We were pleased to be associated with the Festival.”

New Zealand writer Albert Wendt was to participate in the Festival but family circumstances prevented him from doing so.

During his bilateral visit to Indonesia 19-20 October, New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully called on the Executive Director of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Mr Hidetoshi Nishimura, at the ERIA offices in Jakarta.

This was the second time the Minister has visited ERIA, a signal of New Zealand’s strong support for the work of ERIA in providing policy support for the economic ambitions of ASEAN and EAS Leaders.

New Zealand sent its inaugural team to participate in the International Qur’an Competition for Southeast Asia held in Jakarta, 2-4 October 2010. The event was organised by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs with the support of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia.

New Zealand has provided an initial NZD$450,000 in emergency funding to support the immediate relief and reconstruction effort following the Mentawai tsunami, Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced today.

"Reports out of Mentawai show that the situation is worse than initially thought. The numbers of fatalities are rising and the latest official figures put the death toll at 311, and 400 missing," Murray McCully said.

"Hundreds of people have been injured and more than 4,000 families have had to leave their homes.
