A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred near the city of Christchurch in Canterbury, New Zealand, on 22 February 2011.

A revitalized scholarships scheme, the New Zealand-ASEAN-Scholars Awards, seeks to make a substantial contribution to ASEAN’s development by providing increased opportunities for postgraduate studies in New Zealand, including for Indonesians.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully today expressed New Zealand’s gratitude for the messages of condolence received and for the offers of assistance made by many countries to help New Zealand’s search and rescue efforts following yesterday’s earthquake in Christchurch.

The New Zealand Red Cross Person Enquiry Line is now activated.

 

People in New Zealand concerned about the wellbeing of friends and relatives in Christchurch should call 0800 REDCROSS (0800 733 276).

 

If you are unable to contact a friend or relative in the Christchurch area, call the Red Cross Person Enquiry Line. Red Cross will be able to tell you if they have registered with Civil Defence.

 

People are encouraged to do this before reporting friends and relatives missing.

Christchurch Earthquake
Update for International Students and Families

Reports have been confirmed of a significant aftershock that hit New Zealand’s South Island, near the city of Christchurch, at lunchtime today.

Ministry of Education is awaiting further reports from emergency services and education providers as safety assessments continue to be undertaken.

Some transport routes have been affected and Christchurch Airport is temporarily closed while safety inspections take place.
