The publication of a caricature of the Prophet Mohammed and a film depicting the Prophet found offensive by Muslim people increase the chance of protest action directed at United States and French interests in particular.  Violence associated with protest activity cannot be ruled out and could extend to other Western interests in Indonesia.

ASEAN is like a car embarked on a long journey. This episode was akin to getting a flat tyre somewhere along the way. Disappointing and even annoying, but it does not spell the end of the road. I’ve spent a lot of time in multi-lateral meetings and have learned that consensus cannot always be found when major issues are at play, or when someone is reluctant to have an outcome.
