The Ministry for Primary Industries has received results confirming that the bacteria found in the whey protein concentrate (WPC) manufactured by Fonterra is not Clostridium botulinum. The organism is confirmed as Clostridium sporogenes. It is therefore not capable of producing botulism causing toxins.

The ASEAN Secretariat hosted celebrations to mark the 46th anniversary of ASEAN in Jakarta on Friday 23 August 2013. The commemoration began with a flag raising ceremony to the rousing tune of the ASEAN anthem, skilfully performed by the ASEAN Choir.

As usual, I read the 29 July edition of Tempo magazine (a cracker of a weekly investigative reporting magazine focusing on developments in Indonesia) with great interest.  A story on “The Scourge of Mercury”, addressing the contamination of river systems through illegal gold mining, grabbed my attention.

New Zealand will hold its second major education fairs of 2013 in Jakarta and Surabaya this month.  Over 20 New Zealand education institutions will be participating in these fairs, including universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics, and a number of other specialised colleges including business, pilot and chef training.
