New Zealand Embassy Rome, Italy

Issuing Passports

New Zealand passports are only issued by offices of the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs in Wellington, Sydney and London.

Application forms are available online but the New Zealand Embassy in Rome and its Honorary Consuls will continue to have stocks of passport application forms if required.

If you apply for your passport from the Department of Internal Affairs in London, please use form PAS 1UK only: Passports lodged in the United Kingdom. An urgent service can be requested.

Entitlement and Validity

New Zealand passports are issued to holders of New Zealand citizenship.

A passport is required for travel to all countries, including Australia. If you have not yet obtained a passport you should get an application form from the Department of Internal Affairs. Normally a passport validity of more than six months is required for a visa to be issued.

If your New Zealand passport has expired or is damaged, an application must be made for a new one.

With the introduction of the Passports Amendment Act 2005, all new passports have a validity of 5 years only and no name endorsements can be printed in a passport. These changes have been implemented to improve the security and integrity of the New Zealand passport and streamline citizenship by descent application procedures. They have also been introduced to ensure New Zealand meets the US requirements for visa waiver border entry from 26 October 2005.

Travel Tips

Always keep your passport in a secure place. It is a good idea to take a couple of copies of your passport identification page, your driver’s licence and credit card and keep them separately in your luggage so that if you lose your passport you have some means of identification. Never hand over your passport as a guarantee (eg, when hiring a vehicle, or as security for an employer).

Nor is it wise to give your passport to a travel agent to arrange visas unless you are dealing with a reliable company.

More information on passports and application forms are available from the Department of Internal Affairs.
