Notarial services

At the Embassy or an Honorary Consulate

Consular staff at the Embassy in Tokyo, and Honorary Consulates in some regional centres, are able to carry out notarial services.  Services and fees are:

  • Issuing certified copies of an original document/set of documents (eg passport) ¥3,700
  • Issuing consular letters as required by the Japanese authorities (eg certificate of signature) ¥7,500
  • Witnessing the signing of official documents (eg wills, land transfer deeds, powers of attorney) ¥7,500
  • Taking affidavits, affirmations, and statutory declarations ¥7,500

If you require a notarial service, please contact the Embassy's Consular Section tel (03) 5478-9651 or email, or your nearest Honorary Consulate directly to make an appointment.  Appointment times at the Embassy in Tokyo are available on Monday and Thursday afternoons between 1:30pm - 5:00pm. 

The issuing of certified copies can also be done via mail.  Please send the document original(s) and the fee in yen cash to the Consular Section, New Zealand Embassy, 20-40 Kamiyama-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0047 by cash registered mail (genkin kakitome) or courier, enclosing a pre-paid/pre-stamped self-addressed return envelope and a cover note setting out what you require and a contact telephone number and email address.  Processing time is 2-3 working days.
