3 years on from the triple disaster: NZ remembers

Representing the government of New Zealand, Ambassador Mark Sinclair attended the commemorative ceremony for the victims ofthe 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake in Tokyo on 11 March.

On the third anniversary of the triple disaster our thoughts go out to all those who lost family members and friends in that terrible tragedy. 11 March 2011 is a dark day that will be permanently etched into the minds of the people of Japan and New Zealand.

The enormity of what Japan suffered on that terrible day was felt deeply by New Zealanders. It was felt especially deeply by those in the Canterbury region, who had experienced their own violent and destructive earthquake less than a month before. We felt then as we do now an overwhelming sense of sympathy and solidarity for our Japanese friends. As we rebuild those communities most affected by these disasters and recover from these tragedies there are opportunities for New Zealand and Japan to work together.
