Japan welcomed into TPP

On Saturday night New Zealand trade minister Tim Groser issued a statement on behalf of the current eleven TPP countries formally welcoming Japan as a new participant in negotiations to conclude a Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. Here’s the link to the full statement.

With this announcement New Zealand and Japan become partners in a long-term regional economic integration initiative, one of immense importance not only for business links between our two countries but also for the future evolution of economic relationships and economic governance across the Asia-Pacific region.

There will be no doubt be challenges ahead of us in the negotiation itself but this announcement also opens the way to developing untapped potential in the relationship between our two countries. To all our friends in Japan we say: welcome aboard, it’s great to have you in.
