Learning from Japan’s experience - Visit by Roger Sutton

Roger Sutton, chief executive of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, visited Japan from 3 to 10 December to learn from Japan’s reconstruction effort following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in January 1995 and the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 as well as to engage discussions with those who are interested in participating in the Canterbury rebuild.

Sutton visited the cities of Sendai in northern Japan and Kobe in the western part of the nation and met with local officials and citizens who were involved in the rebuild of their cities.

In Tokyo, he briefed Japanese construction companies on Christchurch’s reconstruction plan and called for their participation in various projects to rebuild the city.

Sutton also held a press conference at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo on 9 December and answered questions on his visit and the progress of the Christchurch rebuild.
