Made-in-Japan beef becomes available again in New Zealand

Japanese beef producers are now able to export their products to New Zealand for the first time since 2010.

The governments of New Zealand and Japan recently reached an agreement on requirements for Japanese bovine products that are imported to New Zealand.

New Zealand banned Japanese beef imports in 2010 after the discovery of foot and mouth disease in Japan.

Among other regulations, the imported products must come from animals that have been born and reared in Japan. The products also must be processed at establishments in Japan certified by the Japanese government.
