New Zealand ranks #1 in Social Progress
A Washington-based think-tank called ‘The Social Progress Imperative’ has named New Zealand as the most socially advanced country in the world. The group was founded on the belief that true social progress cannot simply be extrapolated from a countries economic statistics (such as GDP).
As an example, GDP in New Zealand has been on the rise thanks to the rebuild efforts happening in Christchurch, however the loss of the previous buildings during the 2011 earthquake did not count against the country’s GDP. The Social Progress Index instead measures factors such as: Nutrition and Basic Medical Care, Personal Safety, Tolerance and Inclusion and Personal Rights, in an attempt to gauge the true social progress a country is making.
