NZ Defence Chief Meets Japanese Counterpart

11 August 2014
The Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Tim Keating, met today with the Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Japan Self-Defense Forces, General Shigeru Iwasaki.

The two Generals exchanged views on the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and discussed opportunities for expanding bilateral defence cooperation.

"Japan is an important international partner for New Zealand. Our common values and shared perspectives on regional security are important building blocks underpinning what is a broad and multi-faceted relationship,” LTGEN Keating said.

"In August 2013 we signed a ‘Memorandum of Intent concerning Defence Cooperation and Exchanges’ to provide a framework for the defence relationship and to establish the parameters for enhancing engagement.

"We agreed to promote cooperation in areas such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, international peacekeeping activities, and counter-piracy operations," he said.
