New Zealand Embassy Tokyo, Japan

Remembrance Day 2013

Against a blustery and grey sky at the Hodogaya Commonwealth War Cemetery in Yokohama on Sunday, representatives from many Commonwealth Embassies, the Japanese Government, municipalities, veterans associations, business organisations and schools in Tokyo gathered to mark Commonwealth Remembrance Day.

Also called Armistice Day, this day commemorates the fallen and wounded of many world wars.  The timing of the commemoration, normally held on 11 November, holds special significance as it was on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 that the guns finally fell silent marking the end to hostilities in World War I.  This year the New Zealand Embassy had the honour of leading the commemoration.
