Trade Minister speaks on TPP and Economic Integration in the Asia Pacific

Hon Tim Groser speaking at the International Conference on The Future of Asia in Tokyo

New Zealand Trade Minister Hon Tim Groser on 23 May delivered a major address at the International Conference on The Future of Asia in Tokyo on the theme of “TPP and Trade Integration in the Asia Pacific”.

In his speech the minister looked back to the experience of countries as diverse as New Zealand and China in using trade policy as a driver of domestic policy reform for economic growth.

He also highlighted major trends in the trade agenda including convergence--mega free trade agreements bringing together groups of countries in the same region--and the shift to high-quality trade agreements.

Finally Minister Groser highlighted the immense significance of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s decision to join the TPP negotiation as part of his wider “Abenomics” economic strategy.
