Visit to Japan by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon David Carter

Rt Hon David Carter, Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, made a courtesy call on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on 11 October. Earlier in the day Mr Carter called on New Komeito Party Leader Yamaguchi, Foreign Minister Kishida, Economy Minister Amari and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Hayashi.

During his stay in Japan, Mr Carter visited the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan. His meeting with Mayor Emiko Okuyama focused on scope for cooperation between Japan and New Zealand on disaster prevention and management. He also visited an area affected by the 2011 earthquake in the prefecture to observe reconstruction efforts and visited Sendai Ikuei Gakuen, a school with close links with several New Zealand schools.
