Prime Minister John Key, in his annual “state of the nation” speech delivered to a business audience in Auckland last week, launched a new programme to boost apprenticeships for the Christchurch reconstruction effort.

Deputy Head of Mission Janet Lowe accompanied by First Secretary Stefan Corbett met with senior Ministry of Finance official Masatsugu Asakawa on 18 January.  Mr Asakawa has just been appointed Executive Assistant to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr Taro Aso.  The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the direction being taken by the new Government on economic, monetary and fiscal policy.

In fact, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations with Japan.


Round 15 of the Trans-Pacific Partnership FTA negotiations began today in Auckland, New Zealand, between the 11 participating countries (including new entrants, Mexico and Canada) represented by over 500 negotiators.


The Australia and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ANZCCJ) celebrated its 40th anniversary in style on Friday night with a gala at the Peninsula Hotel.
